Past approval is not a present product.

The old medicine is no longer sold; a pharmacy-made medicine needs a separate check.

What happened to the old medicine?

Sermorelin had no FDA-approved product on the US market on September 28, 2026.

The former medicine, sermorelin (Geref), had approvals to test growth hormone release and to treat children growing too slowly because of a growth hormone shortage.

The maker stopped marketing the products and asked for withdrawal; both approvals then ended on June 18, 2009.

In March 2013, the FDA concluded that safety or effectiveness problems were not why Geref had been withdrawn from sale.

That finding does not mean the FDA recommends a sermorelin medicine offered now.

Read the FDA record of Geref

Can a pharmacy make it for a patient?

Sermorelin acetate is the version of sermorelin used in Geref; “acetate” is part of that ingredient’s chemical name, not another treatment.

A pharmacy holding a state licence may be able to make this form of sermorelin for you, as of September 28, 2026. The pharmacy must meet the rules for making medicines to order.

The pharmacy needs a valid prescription written for you by someone licensed to prescribe.

The ingredient needs a test-results certificate and must be supplied by an FDA-registered maker.

State rules may add limits, and any official standards for the ingredient’s quality still apply.

The pharmacy must also meet limits on copying a medicine that is still on the market.

The FDA documents reviewed describe general rules for making medicine for one patient with a prescription; they do not directly confirm that sermorelin qualifies.

So ask the pharmacist how the proposed medicine meets these rules; the documents do not guarantee that any particular pharmacy’s product is lawful.

A pharmacy’s custom-made medicine still lacks FDA approval of its own.

Ask which medicine you would receive and which rules apply.

  • Is it the sermorelin acetate form used in the former medicine?
  • Which pharmacy would make the medicine?
  • How do the ingredient, its test certificate and the prescription meet the rules in my state?
