The old treatment approval was for children.
The old sermorelin treatment approval was for children whose growth hormone shortage slowed their growth; it did not cover adult uses such as improving energy or sleep.
Studies reviewed on September 28, 2026 found faster growth in children, but did not show lasting health benefits in older adults.

Evidence note
Children with a diagnosed hormone shortage
Of the 110 children who entered a 1996 study, 86 met the study’s rules for having their growth results included.
Their average yearly growth pace rose from about 4 cm before treatment to about 7 cm at the end of the study year.
There was no separate group of children receiving no sermorelin to show how growth compared without the medicine, and the study did not test health benefits in adults.

Older men, followed briefly
In a 1997 study, 11 older men were followed over 6 weeks.
Growth hormone rose, but the study found no change in weight, muscle or fat measurements.
Two of six strength tests and a test of how long the men could keep exercising improved, but the small, brief study did not show lasting health benefits.

This study used a different substance.
Another study followed 19 older adults for 16 weeks using a substance similar to sermorelin but with a chemical change, rather than sermorelin itself.
Men gained lean mass, meaning body weight other than fat, while other measures of body makeup did not change.
That study tested a different substance, so it does not show that sermorelin would give the same result.
